Project Title: Exploring organic and organometallic synthesis for drug design
Research overview. The research at my group consists of the design, synthesis, and characterization of organic and organometallic compounds like chalcones, ketals, and acetals. The newly synthesized products are evaluated for their antineoplastic and anti-inflammatory properties. We are mostly focused on comparing the results of the new compounds with the commercially available Tamoxifen, a nonsteroidal drug that inhibits the action of estrogen and is used in treatments of hormone-dependent breast cancer. We have studied the interaction of some of the compounds with gold surfaces to evaluate their potential in material sciences area.
Technique and Skills: The REU student will perform synthesis, purification by chromatography and stuctural characterization using FT-IR, NMR, GC-MS and UV-Vis.
